He had been self-employed before I met him and we lived together for 4 years before we got married. When we got married he got a job for additional security. He was on about £45000 per year and was putting quite a lot into his pension whilst we were together. I paid more of the domestic bills as the only pension scheme I had was from a long time ago when I first started work. Towards the end he decided he wanted to set up in business again with a friend of his. The Company was asking for voluntary redundancies which he went for so that he could put the money into the new business with his friend. He then left and rented a property. I went to see a solicitor and was told I’d have to fill out a Form E. With the help of a friend I did this. I returned it to the solicitor and they didn’t really offer me any guidance if I it was what I could get. It was a friend who told me I was due money because I had paid the majority of the domestic bills during the marriage whilst he had paid money into his pension fund. I think he had been putting about £18000 per year into his fund. It wasn’t worth fighting for the smaller amounts as it would cost more than it was worth. Obviously he disputed the pension issue but we settled the case between us without going to Court. After many letters backwards and forwards and counter claims from him I would estimate my legal costs were around £6000. I expect his were similar. The process took just over 2 and a half years from start to finish.
